Motorhomes need an annual MOT once they are three years old, just like cars. The tricky part is finding a test centre with a bay big enough. Here is what motorhome owners in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre need to know.
Where can I get my motorhome MOT?
Many MOT test centres simply are not big enough for a motorhome. Greenwood has a large testing bay that can take all types of motorhome, which is why owners travel to us from across Lancashire. Motorhomes are tested as Class 4, and our motorhome MOT price is £54.85.
What is tested?
The motorhome MOT covers the roadworthiness of the vehicle:
- Brakes, steering and suspension
- Tyres and wheels, including condition and load rating
- Seatbelts fitted to travelling seats, including those in the living area
- All lights, mirrors, wipers and the windscreen
- Body, chassis and the security of fittings like bike racks and towbars
- Exhaust and emissions
What is not tested?
The MOT does not cover the habitation side of your motorhome: gas, 230V electrics, water systems, appliances and damp. Those are checked in a separate habitation service by a specialist, so it is worth booking one each year alongside your MOT.
How to prepare
- Check your tyres for age. Motorhomes often sit for long periods, so tyres can crack before they wear out. Look closely at the sidewalls.
- Test every light, including marker lamps and any lights on a bike rack or rear carrier.
- Pull out every seatbelt and make sure they all latch and retract.
- Clear access to seatbelt mountings and under-seat areas.
- Top up fluids, including screenwash.
Why pay dealership prices? Dealerships often charge more for the MOT and recommend costly repairs. As an MOT-only centre, Greenwood has no reason to fail your motorhome. If it is safe, we pass it.
