MOT FAQs

Answers to the questions we are asked most about MOT tests in Blackpool.

What does an MOT test check?

The MOT checks that your vehicle meets the legal road safety and environmental standards. Our testers inspect lights and signalling, brakes, steering and suspension, tyres and wheels, seatbelts, the body and structure, exhaust and emissions, mirrors, wipers and the windscreen, the horn, registration plates and the VIN.

It does not check the general condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox, which is one more reason an honest MOT matters.

When does my vehicle need an MOT?

You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either:

  • the third anniversary of its registration, or
  • the anniversary of its last MOT, if it is over 3 years old.

Some vehicles, such as taxis and ambulances, need to be tested at one year old.

What is the earliest date I can get an MOT?

An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on your last pass certificate, and you can check it free on GOV.UK.

You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. For example, if your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can test and keep that date is 16 April.

What if my MOT has run out?

You cannot drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be fined up to £1,000 if you are caught.

The only exceptions are driving it:

  • to or from somewhere to be repaired
  • to a pre-arranged MOT test

Call us on 01253 768373 and we will get you booked in, or ask about our pick-up service.

Why choose an MOT-only test centre?

Because we do not do repairs, we make nothing from failing your vehicle. Our only job is an honest, thorough test. If it is safe, we pass it. Garages that also do repairs often advertise cheap MOTs and make the money back on repair work, which is a conflict of interest we simply do not have.

If your vehicle does fail, we will tell you how much the repair should reasonably cost and where you can go to get it done.

How long does an MOT take?

Most MOTs take around 45 minutes to an hour. You are welcome to wait in our clean, warm waiting area with a free brew, or use our pick-up and drop-off service.

What happens if my vehicle fails?

You will get a refusal certificate listing the reasons. If any defects are classed as dangerous, the vehicle cannot be driven until they are repaired. With major defects, you will need them fixed and the vehicle retested.

We talk you through the results in plain English, give you a fair idea of what repairs should cost, and point you to reputable local garages.

Do I need to bring any documents?

No. MOT records are held digitally, so all you need to bring is the vehicle. It helps to clear clutter from the boot and cabin, and make sure the seatbelts and spare wheel (if fitted) are easy to reach.

Can you MOT my motorhome?

Yes. Motorhomes are a speciality. Many test centres are too small to take large vehicles, but our large testing bay can accommodate all types of motorhome. Read more about motorhome MOTs.

Do you offer pick-up and drop-off?

Yes, we offer free pick-up and drop-off in Blackpool and the surrounding areas. Mention it when you book and we will arrange a time that suits you.

How much is an MOT?

Car and motorhome MOTs are £54.85 and Class 7 light commercial MOTs are £58.60. A free brew is included with every MOT. See prices and offers.

How can I check when my MOT is due?

Use the free check MOT status service on GOV.UK with your registration number. You can also sign up there for a free text or email reminder a month before it is due.
